Sunday School Ministry 

First United Methodist Church places a major emphasis on strong and growing Sunday School classes for persons of all ages. Christian education classes for Children and Youth are graded according to age. A variety of adult classes are offered to meet the needs of almost everyone. We invite you to come and grow with us as we explore the Scriptures, our faith and new relationships through the Sunday School. Our Sunday School time is from 9:30-10:30.

The Alpha and Omega class consists of young adults single and married.

Buddy Wood
Room: 100
Average Attendance: 15
The Buddy Wood class warmly invites new members to join their fellowship of retired-aged married couples, widows and widowers. This class studies through a team of volunteer teachers that presents lessons from the Adult Bible Series. The Buddy Wood class supports the Methodist Home, Christmas in Action, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Area Ministry Outreach Services (AMOS).Partner in Education Burnet Elementary and new hymnals for the sanctuary.

 

Challengers

Room: 201

Average Attendance: 14

The Challengers class participates in bible studies that are focused towards application to daily living and biblical history. The challengers enjoy socializing in class, breakfast and evening fellowship, cookouts (crawfish boils, baseball games, etc.). Together, they support the MS Walk and March of Dimes.

 

Community of Joy

Room: 218

Average Attendance: 7-10

The Community of Joy class consists of singles and couples ranging in age from early 30s to 80s. This class takes turns facilitating bible based lessons. Outside of Sunday School, the Community of Joy class enjoys gathering together outside the class to break enjoy each other’s company.

 

Experience Faith

Room: 219

Average Attendance: 8-10

The Experience Life class consists of singles and couples in their 20s and 30s, some with young children. Class members take turns leading the class through bible based studies. They enjoy group discussion and varying viewpoints.

 

Together, they support Angel Tree and Area Ministry Outreach Services Area Ministry Outreach Services (AMOS).

 

Faith Walk

Room: 204

Average Attendance: 10

The Faith Walk class welcomes all who want to learn God’s Word and give support to others inside and outside the class. Class participants are couples and singles in their 30s – 50s. The Faith Walk class enjoys a gourmet coffee bar and fun people.

 

Families in Christ

Room: 200

Average Attendance: 15-20

The Families in Christ Class is committed to supporting class member by building strong families and reaching out to the community through faith. Class participants are couples with pre-school and elementary aged children. They participate in biblically based studies that include a wide range of issues relating to the family and the Christian faith.

 

Frequent social events provide opportunities for the class to develop relationships and their service projects allow them to put faith into action.

 

Friends & Fellowship

Room: 231

Average Attendance: 15-20

The Friends and Fellowship class invites those looking for spiritual fellowship and to develop life long bonds with fellow Christians. Class participants are couples with young children (infant through elementary). They study scripture and studies related to strengthening parents and families and enjoy fellowship before their lessons, at least one family trip per year and numerous social gatherings.

 

Together they support Habitat for Humanity, Dress a Live Doll, and First Methodist Children’s Programs.

 

Homer Fort Fellowship Class

Room: 107

Average Attendance: 60

Singles and couples 50 years and older attend the Homer Fellowship Class. Members take turns choosing their own subjects and leading the class discussion. The class enjoys cookies and coffee before class, Wednesday Night Live programs, and social events (dinners, parties, and Midland Community Theater).

 

They support Area Ministry Outreach Services (AMOS).Christmas in April, Soup Kitchen, Spirit Wind, Children’s Clinic, Dress-a-Live-Doll, Blessing for Obedience, Burnet Christmas Clothing and many others.

 

 

Joan Weir

Average attendance: 20-25

Room: 229-230

The Join Weir class consists of couples with children in high school and older. The age range of class members is from 40 – 65. The class members take turns teaching from a variety of Biblical resources and leading class discussion.

 

The Joan Weir class supports Area Ministry Outreach Services (AMOS)., Christmas in Action, Partner in Education Burnet Elementary, as well as other charitable and church-wide projects. They also gather together for marvelously great, truly Methodist potluck suppers as well as an annual Christmas party.

 

New Life Class

Room: 202

Average Attendance: 15-20

New Life class members are fun and humorous singles and couples with children of all ages. They study scripture and a variety of topics to living a Christian life. Class members enjoy social gatherings and supporting church events and activities together.

 

As a class, they support Burnet Elementary, Christmas in Action and other outreach activities as well as greeting, ushering, and Wednesday Night Live clean-up.

 

Parent Connection (Does not meet all Sundays)

Room: Basement

Average Attendance: 20

The Parent Connection class consists of parents and guardians of teenagers and is led by Director of Youth Ministries, Jay Gage. The class discusses books and articles that specifically deal with teens, teen culture, and ways to effectively raise teenagers in the current culture. Together they support Oasis Youth Ministries, Celebration Singers, and other organizations and causes that support our teens.

 

Partners

Room: 101-102

Average Attendance: 50

The Partners class welcomes all interested adults to their class consisting of singles and couples ages 50 and up in varying life stages - ranging from career to retirement. With a team of volunteer teachers from the class, the group participates in adult bible studies in a lecture format.

 

The Partners enjoy fellowship before class, parties and other social events throughout the year. Together, they support many different Methodist missions and community agencies through our annual fund drive. They also support class members and other church members in times of need with prayer, visitation, food, and other services.

 

Pathfinders

Room: 226

Average Attendance: 12

The Pathfinders class consists of singles and couples that share a faithful desire to follow the path of God. They invite guests looking for a Sunday school class to join them for discussion on various bible studies and Christian literature. Outside of class, the Pathfinders enjoy occasional potluck suppers.

 

Roundtable

Room: 227

Average Attendance: 8

The Roundtable class welcomes guests to join them for class discussions on various Christian topics. This class consists of singles and couples ages 40-65. They enjoy class parties, occasional Sunday lunches together, and for the past 31 years they have participated in Christmas in Action.

 

Seekers

Room: 220

Average Attendance: 15-22

The Seekers are singles and couples ranging in age from 45 and up. They pray, learn, laugh, cry, and socialize together as they study the Old and New Testaments, life issues, discipleship and spirituality. They love to get together for fellowship and coordinate activities such as group meals, game nights, swimming parties, their own "Amazing Race," a men’s breakfast on Saturday, a women’s social once a month.

Together, the Seekers support Area Ministry Outreach Services (AMOS), Sager Brown, Burnett Elementary, Special Offerings, Support Children and Youth ministries and other charitable donations.

 

Soul Quest

Room: 228

Average Attendance: 7

Soul Quest is a class of spiritual adults seeking answers to life’s questions within their experience of the spiritual community and their experience and understanding of the universe today. Scripture and tradition are significant guides in this quest.

 

The Soul Quest class has discusses books in a discussion format. Books they’ve studied include: When Jesus Came to Harvard by Harvey Cox, Beyond Belief by Elaine Pagels, The Four Agreements by Don Miquel, Journey of Souls by Michael Newton and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

 

As a class, they support individuals who have inquiring minds, who are struggling to survive with the confines of tradition, who see anything and everything open to question which fall within their experience of spiritual concerns.

 

Sunday Morning Glory

Room: 225

Average attendance: 10

The Sunday Morning Glory class consists of couples and singles of all ages. This class studies the bible and focuses on real life applications of God’s word through round-table discussions.

They participate in Dress-A-Live-Doll, serving Bereavement dinners, and Christmas in Action.

 

Sunday Singles

Room: 217

Average Attendance: 8

The Sunday Singles class invites single and married women of all ages to join them as they grow in faith by studying the Old and New Testaments. Their goal is to grow in faith, wisdom, and the knowledge of God’s word and to apply it in their lives each day.

Sunday singles enjoy fellowship, prayer, and support for each other.

They also support Area Ministry Outreach Services (AMOS).

 

Weavers

Room: 103

Average Attendance: 9

The Weavers are a class of men and woman, single and married, ages 50 and up that study books by different authors with biblical backgrounds. They enjoy family, friends, and going to the theater, dinner, Sunday morning breakfast and birthday parties.

 

Together they support Area Ministry Outreach Services (AMOS), special families in need, Burnet Elementary, Choir, and Stephen Ministry.
